Westview overcomes setback to win NECC | heraldry

ANGOLA – The state’s 14th-ranked Westview tennis team won the Northeast Corner Conference tournament on Saturday at Wright Courts next to Angola Middle School. But it was not without a certain setback from the rest of the conference.

The semi-final was proof of that. A few matches in three sets took place in this round.

West Noble’s Wes Shaw and JJ Jacobs led Warriors Jethro Hostetler and Kylen Bender 4-1 in the first set of a No.2 doubles semi-final game. The Westview duo rallied and continued to roll 7-5, 6-0.

Prairie Heights junior Leyton Byler faced one of the area’s best players, Isaiah Hostetler, in a No.1 singles semi-final. The first set was tied at 5, and Hostetler defeated Byler 7-5, 6-4.

“These two faced each other like crazy,” Warriors coach Tyler Miller said of the singles semi-final. “With two doubles, we mainly talked about movement. We were just slow and worked on the closure.

The biggest shot was thrown by junior Chase Bachelor of Prairie Heights, who rallied to upset seed Brennan Beachy in a No. 3 singles semi-final 0-6, 7-6 (7 -4), 7-5.

“Brennan didn’t react well after winning the first set. We left an opening, ”Miller said.

“There were a lot of things that could be fixed. We cannot settle, ”he continued. “It was good for us. We’re probably going to sectional as a favorite and we better get ready.

Bachelor won the No. 3 singles title, beating Charger Luke Schermerhorn 6-4, 6-2. in the championship game. The third-seeded Schermerhorn rallied to beat No. 2 seed Alex Chilenski of Fremont 2-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

Westview swept the other four positions to win the championships by winning all three of their straight sets. The Warrior Champions were Isaiah Hostetler in # 1 singles, Elijah Hostetler in # 2 singles, # 1 doubles team of seniors Isaac Rogers and Kendall Schwartz, # 2 doubles team of Bender and Jethro Hostetler .

Westview had 60 points. West Noble and Fremont are tied for second at 39, followed by Fairfield (33), Prairie Heights (25), Angola (20), Lakeland (12), Churubusco (9) and Central Noble (3).

The finalist coaches were happy with the way their teams played leading up to next week’s sections. Fremont will be in the DeKalb section and West Noble will be in the East Noble section.

“I think we played really well,” said Eagles coach Neal Frantz. “You want to play well before the section and I’m as proud as I can get. “

Chargers coach Greg Riegsecker said, “I think it was a good day. We started really well. There were close matches where we came out on top. We haven’t finished so well, but we’ll see how things go.

Schermerhorn and Nate Shaw in the No. 2 singles were conference finalists for West Noble. They both won straight sets against Fremont in the semifinals to advance to the final matches.

Fremont had senior Josh Sherbondy back on the roster after missing much of this season with a broken wrist. Sherbondy teamed up with his classmate Connor Trobaugh and they placed second in doubles.

“I thought they played well together,” said Frantz. “We were second seeded and finished second. “

The draws for the men’s tennis sections will be published Monday evening on IHSAAtv.org.
