One injured, one in custody after shooting in Sumter County

SUMTER, SC (WIS) – The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting at Pilgrim’s Pride off the United States.

Officials say the incident is no longer active. One person, Jeffrey Laverne Green Jr., 18, was arrested.

Green has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon in a violent crime.

The call regarding the shooting arrived around 10:45 a.m. Monday.

Officials say Green shot another man after a physical altercation while in the parking lot at Pilgrim’s Pride.

The victim was transported from the scene to an area hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. He is expected to recover.

MPs said Pocalla Springs Elementary School, Furman Middle School and Lakewood High School were closed in response to the incident.

A teacher told WIS that she had received an alert from reception so she locked her doors and told the children to sit down.

“You have a lot of thoughts going through your mind and you start to worry and look out the doors and windows, but I was really focused on the kids,” Sherri Baker said. “I didn’t want them to cry and worry. I asked if it was real or if it was a real exercise. I think they figured it out. “

Since then, the confinement of schools has been lifted.

Green is being held in the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center until his first appearance hearing.

This incident is still under investigation. Other charges are pending.
