Oakland University informs students of reported sexual assault, says description of suspect matches 2019 incident


ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University Informs Community of Attempted Sexual Assault They Learned About This Month

The university sent an alert to the students, saying the assault took place in May, but the victim reported it in October.

“At first when you see a notification like this it’s pretty scary,” Liv Murphy said.

Murphy, a junior at Oakland University, said the email definitely caught his eye.

The university released information to students about a sexual assault on Friday.

“It was reported to the University of Oakland Police Department that an attempted sexual assault reported today, Friday October 8, took place on campus in May of this year,” it read. in the newsletter.

“Reading that this happened in May, my first thought was like, ‘Okay, still scary, but I’m glad we’re still dealing with it,'” said Murphy.

“I was just glad that she felt comfortable enough to come and talk to someone, who could do something,” said sophomore Koda Grasl said.

Also in the newsletter it says: “An investigation into the incident revealed that the suspect fits the description of a person allegedly involved in a separate assault that occurred in October 2019. During the incident Previously, it would also have taken place on campus, the suspect was described as an acquaintance of the person who filed the report.

Grasl said she was happy the school informed them of the recent incident and the previous one.

“Thinking that this person could have done it several times. But unfortunately it happens a lot, ”she said.

Junior Kayla Youcha said it was a sad reality, but she’s glad the school is taking it seriously.

“I’m not surprised. Unfortunately, it’s on all college campuses, but Oakland is a pretty safe school. It’s one of the safest schools in Michigan. It’s very unfortunate though,” said Youcha.
