Sister Lillie M. Spann Cooper passed away peacefully at her home early Monday morning, August 29, 2022, in Sumter.

She was born on January 13, 1960, the youngest child born to her parents, the late James and Janie Thomas Spann. Sister Cooper was affectionately called Lillie or Lillie Mae by her family and friends. She attended the Kershaw County public school system. Lillie graduated from Camden High School. She was employed by the Sumter County Public School System for several years. Lillie has worked at Willow Drive, Crosswell and Millwood Elementary. She retired from Furman Middle School on June 3, 2022. She was thrilled and very excited about her recent retirement. After retiring for a few months and having a deep and strong love for children, Lillie began volunteering this 2022-2023 school year at Pocalla Springs Elementary School three times a week.

Lillie was a devoted and loving member of her church. She attended St. John as a child. When she grew up and clearly understood the importance of giving her life to Christ, she was baptized and became a life member of St. John Baptist. Sister Lillie was vice president of missionary ministry, an active member of Bible study classes, and continued faithfully during COVID-19 via Zoom every Wednesday evening. She was usher and member of the 1st Sunday Choir.

Those who will forever cherish Lillie’s love and kind heart: her son, Willie (Shaquana) Cooper; daughter of the house, Shannan Cooper; sisters, Mabel Spann of Sumter and Dianne (Willie) James of Camden; young girls; as well as nephews, nieces, cousins, other relatives and friends.

We are deeply grateful and will always cherish the time the Lord gave us for the life Lillie lived, the love she gave to her family, her church, her friends and the children she served for so many years. many years in the Sumter school system.

In accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, the family requests that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visits to the home of their son, Willie Cooper, 715 N. Main St., Sumter.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at St. John Baptist Church, 1315 Springhill Road, Camden.

The remains will be placed in the church at noon to be viewed until the time of the services.

The procession will leave the house at noon. Burial will take place in the cemetery of Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church.
